Long term closure scheduled for Highway 77 in Mississippi County due to new bridge construction

Manila, Arkansas – Drivers in Mississippi County are being advised to prepare for a long-term road closure that will significantly impact travel in the area for several months.

Highway 77, located north of Highway 158 near County Road 538, is scheduled to close beginning at 6 a.m. on Monday, March 30. The closure will remain in effect around the clock for approximately 160 days, with an expected reopening date of Monday, September 7, depending on weather conditions.

Officials say the extended shutdown is necessary to allow crews to move forward with the construction of a new bridge, a project aimed at improving long-term safety and infrastructure in the area.

Detours in place for both directions of travel

During the closure, a clearly marked detour route will guide drivers around the affected section of Highway 77. Those attempting to reach the south side of the closure will be directed to travel north on Highway 77 to Highway 18, then east on Highway 18 to Highway 181. From there, motorists will head south on Highway 181 to Highway 158, and finally west on Highway 158 back to Highway 77.

For drivers heading toward the north side of the closure, the detour will follow the reverse path. Traffic will move south on Highway 77 to Highway 158, then east on Highway 158 to Highway 181. Drivers will then go north on Highway 181 to Highway 18, before heading west on Highway 18 to reconnect with Highway 77.

Transportation officials emphasized that these routes are designed to maintain traffic flow while keeping drivers away from the active construction zone.

Safety reminders and travel resources

To help alert motorists, crews will install digital message boards, construction barrels, barricades, and clear signage throughout the area. These warnings are intended to give drivers advance notice and help reduce confusion as they approach the closure.

Officials are urging drivers to stay alert, follow posted signs, and allow extra travel time, especially during the early days of the closure when adjustments may take longer.

For the latest updates and additional travel information, motorists are encouraged to visit IDriveArkansas.com or ARDOT.gov. These resources will provide real-time details on road conditions and any changes related to the project.

With the closure set to last through the summer months, drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and use the designated detours to avoid delays while construction crews work to complete the new bridge.
