Mayor Scott pushes for sales tax increase to fund Little Rock projects

Little Rock, Arkansas – Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr. has been actively engaging the community with educational sessions about his proposed sales tax increase since his State of the City address in February. As summer progresses, he’s gearing up to present this initiative to voters once more, hoping for a different outcome than the unsuccessful attempt in 2021.

A Strategic Proposal for Urban Development

The proposed increase, a one percent hike in the sales tax, is aimed at boosting the city’s funding for various capital projects. Mayor Scott projects that this increase could generate approximately $650 million over the next decade. He draws inspiration from other cities that have successfully revitalized through similar initiatives. “Anyone who saw the transformation of Oklahoma City in the mid-90s and sees what it is today because their residents decided to invest in themselves in every part of their area,” Scott remarked, highlighting the potential benefits of investing in the community.

The focus of the sales tax proposal is on what Mayor Scott refers to as the “four Ps”: Public Safety, Public Infrastructure, Parks and Recreation, and Port and Economy. If approved, the revenue from the tax increase would be allocated to significant enhancements across these key areas.

Planned Improvements and Community Impact

Specifically, the additional funds would be used to address several urgent needs within the city. These include purchasing new police vehicles and constructing a new fire station along Highway 10. Moreover, Mayor Scott envisions the development of three new sports complexes and upgrades to War Memorial Park, efforts that would not only improve local amenities but also boost community engagement and economic growth.

This week, the proposal is set to be discussed and potentially voted on by the Little Rock directors. Their decision will determine whether the sales tax increase will be presented to voters on the November ballot. This pivotal moment could lead to transformative changes in Little Rock, mirroring the successes seen in other cities that have embraced similar fiscal strategies.

The outcome of this vote and the subsequent voter response will play crucial roles in shaping the future of Little Rock, as the community decides whether to invest in its infrastructure and public services.
