Pine Bluff, Arkansas – St. Patrick’s Day celebrations will take place nationwide on and around Monday, March 17, bringing plenty of festivities and gatherings. With the holiday often associated with alcohol consumption, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has partnered with the Pine Bluff Police Department to remind drivers that drinking and driving is not an option.
Law Enforcement Warns Against Drunk Driving
Lieutenant DeShawn Bennett, Public Information Officer for the Pine Bluff Police Department, emphasized the serious risks of impaired driving. “Embracing St. Patrick’s Day and its traditions is one thing; engaging in the deadly behavior that is drinking and driving is another. Feeling buzzed and getting behind the wheel puts lives at risk,” said Lieutenant Bennett. “As law enforcement officers, we witness firsthand the devastation and loss caused by alcohol-impaired driving, along with the lasting pain it inflicts on families, friends, and entire communities. We’re partnering with NHTSA to share the reminder that Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving. Drinking and driving is not an option, but making sure someone sober will be behind the wheel is.”
Planning Ahead Can Save Lives
Officials urge everyone celebrating St. Patrick’s Day to plan for a safe ride home before drinking. Alcohol impairs judgment, and waiting until after drinking to figure out a way home can lead to dangerous decisions. The safest approach is to arrange for a designated sober driver or use a rideshare service.
If someone realizes they are too impaired to drive, they should hand over their keys to a sober friend who can get them home safely. Friends and family should also step in when necessary—if someone has been drinking and is about to drive, take their keys and help them find another way home.
Report Drunk Drivers to Authorities
The community also plays a critical role in preventing drunk driving accidents. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is encouraged to contact local law enforcement at 870-541-5300 or dial 911.
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over
The Pine Bluff Police Department and NHTSA emphasize that responsible driving is the key to keeping roads safe during holiday celebrations. “Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving,” and there are no excuses for putting lives at risk.
