McGehee, Arkansas – The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is set to host a significant health outreach event titled “Party With a Purpose” on August 3rd in McGehee. This initiative aims to provide crucial health screenings and resources to the community, particularly targeting rural residents in Desha, Chicot, Drew, Jefferson, and Pulaski counties, although the event is open to all Arkansans.
Comprehensive Health Services Offered
UAMS will offer a range of free health services at the McGehee Men’s Club Community Center located at 1 South Airport Road. From noon to 4 p.m., attendees can benefit from free HIV screenings, glucose readings, mental health assessments, and blood pressure checks. In addition to the health screenings, the event will feature a resource fair and a backpack drive, aiming to equip attendees with both health information and essential supplies for the upcoming school year.
A Day of Education and Entertainment
The health and resource fair is just the beginning of a day filled with activities. A free lunch will be provided to attendees, fostering a communal atmosphere. Following the fair, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., a talent show featuring special guest performances will take place. Admission to this talent show is free for anyone who participates in an HIV screening, encouraging community members to take an active role in their health.
The “Party With a Purpose” is more than just a fun day out; it’s a pivotal opportunity for rural Arkansans to access health resources that might otherwise be inaccessible. Sponsored by the Research and Evaluation Division of the UAMS Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, the event underscores the university’s commitment to reducing the incidence of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, and other health issues in the region.
Additional Services Available
For those unable to attend the event, UAMS also offers free health screenings and rapid testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases at the UAMS Gap Services office at 1609 E. Ash St. in McGehee. This ongoing support is part of UAMS’s dedicated effort to provide continuous health resources to the community.
