Pine Bluff, Arkansas – Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced a $3 million investment for the construction of a new Health and Wellness Center at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). This funding marks a significant step in supporting the university’s students and community by enhancing health, wellness, and academic resources on campus.
Commitment to UAPB’s Success
“As a Pine Bluff native, I know how important UAPB is to the success of that city and our entire state,” said Governor Sanders. “UAPB is our state’s foremost HBCU and deserves support for its unique and critical mission. This $3 million investment doubles down on our commitment to the university and its students.”
The funding will contribute to the development of a $36 million state-of-the-art facility. The project will be financed through a combination of funding sources, including dedicated student fees, Title III funds, and bonds. Once completed, the Health and Wellness Center is expected to serve as a cornerstone of campus life and student success.
A Vision for Student and Community Health
Speaker Shepherd, who championed the funding in the legislature, emphasized the broader impact of the project. “Prioritizing health and wellness at UAPB is not just beneficial for the individuals on campus, but it also has a ripple effect that extends to the broader community. I thank the Governor for her diligence in making this a reality and my legislative colleagues for supporting this worthy endeavor.”
Interim Chancellor Andrea Stewart expressed gratitude on behalf of the university. “The Health and Wellness Center will provide essential support for both the physical and mental well-being of our students. This investment is a vital step in enhancing overall student success and engagement.”
A Multifunctional Facility for Student Success
The Health and Wellness Center is designed to provide a wide range of services and resources for UAPB students. It will feature:
- A student success center offering academic support and resources.
- Comprehensive career services to guide students toward their professional goals.
- Dining options for students and staff.
- A new auditorium and multi-purpose facility for hosting events such as lectures, performances, and community activities.
This state-of-the-art facility aims to be more than just a building; it will serve as the heart of campus life, fostering academic achievement, health, and community engagement.
Supporting the Delta and Beyond
The project is a response to the critical need for upgraded facilities to serve UAPB’s diverse student population from the Delta and surrounding areas. The Health and Wellness Center will not only address these needs but also solidify the university’s role as a leader in higher education in Arkansas.
Governor Sanders’ announcement represents a commitment to advancing the mission of UAPB, ensuring that the university can continue to support the physical, mental, and academic well-being of its students. This investment highlights the broader goal of enhancing opportunities for individuals and communities throughout Arkansas.
